Yes, we receive this question frequently, and we understand the concerns that travelers may have. Colombia is a beautiful country with friendly and hospitable people. As with any destination, it’s essential to take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Having lived in and traveled in and out of Colombia since 2019, I can attest that I have never encountered any safety issues. However, it’s always wise to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling at night or in unfamiliar areas. Avoid areas that give off a negative vibe and trust your instincts. If you’re unsure about a location, it’s best to ask the locals or staff members at Colombia Motorcycle Rental & Tour Co. for advice.

It’s worth noting that most travelers who encounter safety issues in Colombia often do so by engaging in risky behavior such as drug use, excessive drinking, or seeking out prostitution. We recommend that visitors avoid such activities to reduce the risk of trouble. In summary, Colombia is generally a safe place to visit, and with proper precautions, you can have a fantastic and enjoyable experience.

The recommendation for a motorcycle depends on your experience level and what you plan to do with  it. For beginners or those with limited motorcycle riding experience, it is recommended to rent an  automatic city scooter. For experienced and advanced riders, the recommendation varies depending on  the planned trip. For multi-day excursions and long trips outside of the city, the Honda XRE 300  Adventure or similar Adventure motorcycles are recommended. For day adventure trips, the Honda 150  XR is a popular model among local riders and can get you to most destinations safely. Ultimately, it is  best to consult with us to determine which motorcycle would be best for your specific needs.

All rentals from CMRT include a helmet, a travel phone holder, and a USB charger. Optional storage  luggage is also available, even for city scooters. The vehicles are equipped with round-the-clock GPS  tracking travel locational services, ensuring that we always know where you are. Additionally, the  company has partnered with a service called Global Rescue, which uses US military and local military  partnerships around the world to rescue you from any situation you may run into during your trip. All  vehicles come equipped with SOAT, which is a mandatory local Colombian medical insurance. If you  need gear, we can provide anything you need for an additional low cost. Simply ask, and we will be happy  to assist with any additional needs.

The rental period varies depending on what you need and which motorcycle or scooter you plan to rent from us. There are special pricing options for extended rentals and tours, and we can also price match if  you need us to, (especially if you are on a tight budget). It’s best to discuss your specific needs with our  team to determine the rental period that would work best for you.

When embarking on a motorcycle tour across Colombia, it is important to pack appropriately. Some  essential items to bring along include:

  1. Appropriate riding gear: This includes a helmet (included), jacket, gloves, pants, and boots  designed specifically for motorcycle riding.
  2. Comfortable clothing: You’ll want to bring comfortable clothing to wear off the bike, such as t shirts, shorts, and sneakers as well as warm clothing when you are in high Andes Mountains.  3. Rain gear: Colombia is known for its rainy weather, so it’s a good idea to pack rain gear like a rain  jacket and waterproof pants.
  3. Sunscreen and sunglasses: Colombia can get quite hot and sunny, so make sure to pack  sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.
  4. Camera: You’ll want to capture all the beautiful sights and experiences on your trip, so bring a  camera or smartphone to take photos and videos.
  5. Cash and credit cards: While some places may accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to  have cash on hand for emergencies and to make purchases at smaller establishments.  7. First-aid kit: It’s always a good idea to have a basic first-aid kit with you in case of minor injuries  or accidents.
  6. Personal identification: Make sure to bring your passport or other valid identification, as well as  any necessary travel documents.
  7. Cell Phone: If you have one, make sure you bring an old cell phone. Things can get damaged  and dirty quickly here. We recommend picking up a local service plan with a company like Tigo or  Claro and we can also recommend several offline travel mapping programs that can help you  along the way when you don’t get great service.
  8. A sense of adventure: Most importantly, bring a positive attitude and a sense of adventure! Enjoy  your ride and take in all the beautiful sights and experiences that Colombia has to offer. Again,  just ask and we are happy to guide you through the entire process

Yes, all motorcycles come equipped with a mandatory medical insurance policy called SOAT (Seguro

Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito) in Colombia. SOAT is a type of liability insurance that provides  coverage for personal injury and death resulting from traffic accidents. It is required by law for all motor  vehicles in Colombia, including motorcycles, and the cost is included in the rental or tour fee.

The coverage provided by SOAT is limited and does not cover property damage or theft. However, it does  cover medical expenses, disability benefits, and death benefits for third parties involved in an accident  caused by the insured motorcycle. The amount of coverage varies depending on the severity of the injury  or death, up to a maximum of approximately 1.2 billion Colombian pesos (around 325,000 USD) for fatal  accidents.

It’s important to note that SOAT only covers third-party liability, meaning it does not provide any protection  for the rider or the motorcycle itself. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase additional insurance  coverage for the motorcycle and personal accidents, such as comprehensive insurance or travel  insurance, to ensure comprehensive protection in case of accidents or theft. If you have any questions  about private insurance, please let our team know and we would be happy to connect you with a private  provider.

In summary, if the motorcycle gets damaged, the client will be responsible for the cost of repairing the  damage or the actual cash retail value of the motorcycle if it is not repairable, as well as other related  costs.
